7Dossiers

In addition to the recurrent chapters, each edition of the Flemish Indicator Book also offers a number of specific dossiers that provide a summary of relevant figures and recent research into relevant themes. In this edition there are six different files that deal with very different topics.

7.1Six paths through bibliometric studies of interdisciplinary research

In this overview, which is based on a recent study by Glänzel and Debackere (2021), we plot the scenario of contemporary bibliometric research on interdisciplinarity. We show that independently of the chosen approaches and perspectives, six fundamental steps need to be taken to build valid and meaningful measures of interdisciplinarity and to obtain relevant results. All steps provide different options allowing for several models and scenarios. We use the implementation of interdisciplinarity measures at ECOOM Leuven as an example of one possible scenario.

7.2Evolution of the policy mix between free and thematic support for R&D in Flanders

A summarized report in which VARIO maps the relationship between thematically free/bottom-up and thematically steered/top-down Flemish resources for R&D, and monitors how that relationship has evolved over the past ten years.

7.3Strengthening Flanders' technology position with regard to patents

In this dossier VARIO monitors Flanders' technology performance with regards to patents, and maps our region's position internationally.

7.4Open Access and Open Peer Review in the Flemish Social Sciences and Humanities

This dossier reviews the recent literature on Open Access and Open Peer Review, and their implications for the Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH). It includes an overview of the state of Open Access among Flemish research publications in the SSH, as found in the local VABB database.

7.5Humanities go scientometrics

During the last decades, evaluative bibliometrics could largely broaden its scope and its application to the Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH) has become one of the favourite foci. Yet, scholarly communication (and so the available data sources) in the humanities fundamentally differ from those in the basic sciences, which resulted in controversial receptions by the research communities in bibliometrics and the humanities. In this dossier, we will discuss the two perspectives and point to possible future solutions.

7.6The leaky pipeline at work: women heavily underrepresented as inventors in patents

In this report, VARIO attempts to assess the fact that women are underrepresented as inventors in patents for Flanders (not just for Belgium) on the basis of figures provided by ECOOM KU Leuven (Bart Van Looy, Julie Callaert, Marriette Du Plessis). They developed a methodology to assign a gender to inventors based on their first name. Quantifying the number of unique female and male inventors allows among patents and patent portfolios to indicate what the "women inventor rate" (WIR) is in a given region or country.
