7.4Gender analysis of fellowship and research project applications at the Research Foundation – Flanders (FWO) between 2016 and 2020

By Tim Thijs and An Goris (Research Foundation-Flanders (FWO)).

Gender, and in a broader sense diversity, is an important theme in academia. Research funding organizations such as FWO are committed to this issue and attach great importance to creating equal opportunities for all researchers who submit an application for funding, regardless of gender, sex, ethnic identity, nationality, etc. Thorough monitoring of one's own funding channels is one of the cornerstones of an effective equal opportunities policy.

We here present an extensive analysis of the number of applications and success rates of the most important funding channels of FWO in the period 2016-2020, namely the PhD fellowships fundamental research (FR) and strategic basic research (SB), the postdoctoral fellowships and the FR projects. The number of applications and chances of success per gender of the applicant and the gender of the supervisor, the gender composition of applicant teams of researchers and per scientific domain are examined.
