7.4.3.3Research projects

For the research project applications, the 5-year average success rate in the 2016-2020 period was 21,45%. The most popular scientific domains in this funding scheme are Med (2057 applications between 2016 and 2020), followed by S&T (1601), G&M (1369), Bio (851), Cult (594) and Intdis (269).

At first sight, the differences in the chances of success between the various scientific domains appear rather small. We find the highest success rate for Bio (22,56%) and the lowest for Intdis (19,33%), whereby it should be noted that the number of applications in this domain is considerably smaller than in the other scientific domains. The second lowest success rate is found in Cult (20,88%), closely followed by G&M (20,89%). Within the scientific domains, we observe the largest difference in success rates between applications with a male and female promotor-spokesperson in Med (23,28% for a male applicants vs. 18,47% for a female applicant, respectively). In the Intdis panel, we also see a difference of almost 3% (male promotor-spokesperson 20,00% - female 17,19%), although again it should be noted that the number of applications is considerably smaller here. Moreover, in 2020 In Cult (male 20,25% - female 22,16%) and Bio (male 22,46% - female 22,89%) we see slightly higher 5-year average success rates for female promotor-spokespersons.  This was also clearly the case in 2020 , where female promotor-spokespersons had higher success rates than their male colleagues  in Cult, Bio and G&M.
